Opportunity to turbocharge the health of the Planet

17th March 2016

Climate change. Species extinction. Rafts of garbage in oceans. The issues our planet now faces are unprecedented in their scope, urgency, and complexity. If we take to heart E.O. Wilson’s biophilia hypothesis (I do), which suggests that there is an instinctive bond between humans and other living systems, we feel this fragile moment in history deeply and in a variety of different ways. It is scary, overwhelming, and sad.  But it is also galvanizing and inspiring.

Fueled by the depth of our concern and, yes, our love for this wild planet that sustains us all, we can act. We can come together around solutions. We can slow the advance of climate change, we can protect the species with whom we share the planet, and we can take responsibility and clean up our messes. This is what 1% for the Planet is all about - coming together to create global, real, and lasting change for the better.  It takes commitment and hard work. But we have an obligation and an amazing opportunity to save the planet together.

The 1% for the Planet model is uniquely focused on connecting businesses, nonprofits, and individuals working together to urgently address the various environmental challenges we face. It’s within this unique approach that we believe we can accomplish more good together than alone and create new ways of doing business in which investing in the planet is an integral part of success. As we continue to expand in the UK and beyond, we are fortunate enough to work with new members like Pukka who exemplify this way of doing business.

At the COP21 Climate gathering in Paris in December of last year, Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change spoke to a group of funders saying that our collective job is to “turbocharge” the direction that the international governments agree to. Our collective job, she said, is to come together as we never have before to innovate new approaches, generate new levels of support, and create new systems and solutions. 1% for the Planet is all about turbocharging. Our network of member companies, environmental nonprofits, and individuals are creating new kinds of partnerships and new levels of support for our planet every day. Join us.
